Clouds are made up of ice and water particles that float in the sky . These tiny droplets of vital liquid become icy because they are at a temperature below freezing point. Billions of water and ice particles are present in the atmosphere, formed around tiny dust,  soot , smoke, and other solid factors. These small droplets join together to form a massive body of water droplets known as clouds.

What is cloud

The word cloud comes from the Latin “nubes” despite ending in “s” the word is not plural and means “cloud”. It is the condensation of water vapor in the atmosphere, reflected as a mass of liquid water or ice crystals that are visually distinguished from the surface of the Earth, these can be seen in infinite shapes, sizes, textures and colors.

Water droplets in the atmosphere reflect sunlight. When there is less water vapor, less light is reflected and therefore more light passes through to illuminate the bottom of the cloud. When a cloud is heavily loaded with water particles, all the light is reflected (or scattered) without being able to pass through. From the ground, looking up, it looks very dark because no light passes through. As the clouds get higher, the darker the base becomes.

Cloud characteristics

The general characteristics of clouds are :

  • Clouds are a set of tiny and visible ice particles in a solid state, they can also be water in its liquid state, or both states and are called mixed.
  • They may contain particles of water or large ice particles, as well as particles from, such as industrial dust and smoke vapors.
  • They present a variety of shapes, depending strictly on their nature, number, dimension and spatial distribution of the particles that form them and the atmospheric currents.
  • The formation of clouds is from the condensation of water vapor in humid air in the atmosphere.

Cloud types

Tropospheric classification is based on a hierarchy of categories with physical shapes and altitude levels at the top. These are cross-classified into a total of ten genre types.

Clouds in the troposphere  assume physical forms based on the structure and formation process. These shapes are commonly used for satellite analysis. According to the  classification of an international system , created by Howard Luke in 1803, the clouds that can be observed with the naked eye are:


They usually have a uniform and smooth appearance, and in other situations with a fibrous texture, and can also appear in extensive layers. They are composed of ice crystals and form only at high levels (more than 6000 meters. In our latitudes). These formations are persistent and slowly dissipate.

Thin cloud layers, through which lower clouds or their reliefs can be seen, are considered Cirrostratus. Circular clouds are observed along the fronts, on the warm side of the jet streams, and are associated with areas of cumulonimbus clouds of great vertical extent.


They are cloud layers, generally flat and uniform, that do not have organized texture and configuration. Stratiform clouds are caused by the uniform rise of large masses of air, in addition to the spread of other types of clouds. The appearance of these clouds, in a satellite image, is characterized by the existence or not of bands, fibers or cloths.


Clouds that can be seen with an ascending shape, formed inside by a current of hot or warm air, which causes the condensation of raindrops to subside, making it necessary for them to evacuate said pressure, which manifests itself in high-density precipitation.

Climate changes have caused them to remain stationary, rather than being moved by the air current, which can undoubtedly cause heavy rainfall that floods the surface.


They are groups of cloudy elements with irregular shapes and varied sizes. They are commonly arranged in cellular, band, or randomly distributed configurations. They form as a result of moisture condensation in convective systems.

Cumuliform clouds (Cb, Cu, Sc, Cc) in the images appear as masses of irregular shapes, generally with curved edges and cellular texture. The size of individual elements in groups can be below the resolution of infrared sensors and sometimes below the resolution of visible sensors.
